Thapar University (formerly TIET)
Thapar University or previously TIET (Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology - Patiala) takes students through AIEEE , with cut-offs within 20K ranks.
The mandatory disclosure on official website , gives the following (latest) information :
For 2007-2008 (till July 31st July 2008)
Minimum Salary : 2.20 lakhs
Maximum Salary : 12.75 lakhs
Average Salary : 3.97 lakhs
CS had a placement % of 81% . Electronics related streams had 93%(Communications) and 89%(Instrumentation).Chemical and Civil had 91% placements whereas Mechanical had 88%.Electrical had only 77% and Biotech 81%.
For 2008-2009 (till August 31st July 2008) 104 companies had visited the campus for placements down from 132 the previous year.
Within the list of 104 companies , most of them were small/medium Indian companies. Some notable Core MNC companies were : ST Microelectronics , Oracle , Freescale , DE Shaw. These would have offerred 6 lpa +.Also the same with the IOCL .
IT companies like Infosys , Wipro , TCS , Accenture (and possible IBM and Amdocs) were also present , they must have offered 3-4.5 lpa. Siemens and Erricson could have offered 4 lpa +.
Note that the average salaries(132 companies) are for 2007-2008 whereas the prominent names of 104 companies(above) are for 2008-2009.
Though Thapar has higher AIEEE cutoffs , its placement scenario doesn't match up to other comparable AIEEE colleges like the ones mentioned on this blog.

IIIT-Hyderabad Placements
UPDATED part
Recently IIIT-Hyderabad has released information about last year's placements. It is not a part of the mandatory disclosure(as per AICTE norms). Hence the break-up of companies is not available.
Undergraduate Placement
| S.No | Program | Participated Students | Placed | Awaiting Placement | % of Placement | Average Salary (INR)(Lac) |
| 1 | B Tech (CSE) | 941 | 94 | 0 | 100 | 8.542 |
| 2 | BTech (ECE) | 27 | 27 | 0 | 100 | 5.50 |
This includes six off-campus offers.
This includes a $110,000-a-year offer from Google, USA and two same-value offers from Facebook, USA. If the three overseas offers are excluded, the domestic average compensation will be Rs.7.3 lac.
Both Google and Facebook are highly selective recruiters. But Google has been visiting IIIT-Hyderabad for many years now. Most likely they have been recruiting for their India-based offices at around Rs. 10 lpa.
Definitely things are looking up for IIIT-Hyderabad! However by no means is this exclusive. Many other AIEEE colleges do have International placements such as NSIT, NIT-Surathkal etc.
Nevertheless this is one of the best placements in India for CS stream.Apart from placements IIIT-H is well known for its advanced pedagogy in the CS field.
Postgraduate Placement
| S.No | Program | Participated Students | Placed | Awaiting Placement | % of Placement | Average Salary (INR)(Lac) |
| 1 | M Tech (CSE) | 293 | 29 | 0 | 100 | 5.60 |
| 2 | M Tech (CSIS) | 94 | 9 | 0 | 100 | 4.85 |
| 3 | M Tech (CL) | 3 | 3 | 0 | 100 | 4.40 |
| 4 | M Tech (VLSI) | 20 | 195 | 1 | 95 | 4.22 |
| 5 | M Tech (CASE) | 9 | 4 | 5 | 445 | 4.50 |
| 6 | M Tech (BI) | 12 | 6 | 9 | 25 | 4.40 |
One student each from M Tech (CSE) and M Tech (CSIS) has an off-campus job.
This includes three students who only have internship placement. This year, in view of a continuing slump in the semiconductor job market, VLSI students, like in the past year, have offered to consider students with internships placement as “students placed”.
M Tech (CASE) and M Tech (Bioinformatics) programs saw unimpressive placement in view of the depressed infrastructure and bioinformatics job markets.
This includes two students who have internship cum job offers.

NIT-Calicut Placements
NIT-Calicut(National Institute of Technology- Calicut) is one of the premier NITs of India. It has quite good placements , as we shall see in this article.
The official website , gives quite little information. Relevant to us would be the last 2 years placements stats of BE Degree .
To understand clearly how the data has been given , we need to understand the format:
(Branch : EL-PL-DR-%)
where EL-Eligible students, PL-Placed, DR-Dream jobs (Students who got more than one job), %-Percentage of placement.
The Branches are: Computer Science & Engineering ,Electronics & Communication Engineering ,Electrical & Electronics Engineering ,Mechanical Engineering ,Production Engineering,Chemical Engineering.
Clearly the averages are quite good , especially for the CS/EE related branches and Mechanical. All branches show a good % of placement.
According to The Hindu newspaper, for the BE degree students being placed in 08-09 :
309 B.Tech. students got 484 job offers, 97 per cent placements. Of these, 175 students got more than one offer.
Highest salary offered was Rs.12 lpa to 3 CS students by DE Saw Research, an IT consulting company. The lowest salary offered was Rs.3 llpa. (Last year, the highest was Rs.10 lpa ,lowest Rs.2.2 lpa ).This is a good improvement. However , since the highest is 12 lpa , it is unlikely that NIT-C had any foreign placements(which are usually over $50,000 pa).
The average salary remained almost same (Rs 4.75 lpa to Rs.4.8 lakh lpa). This is good , considering that there is a recession on currently. The no. of students wrt. salary range chart is given below:
-
Till February, 95 companies visited the campus (from August 2008 to February 2009). Out of these, 43 were engineering and manufacturing sector companies, 33 were IT product based companies, 9 consulting companies, 6 ITES companies, 2 were banking companies and 2 others.10 (PSUs) recruited 25 per cent of the graduates.
97% of the students got placement in core engineering areas while rest in ITES sectors.Note that "Core" term may have been misused , as they may have considered IT as "Core" for CS.Even though Goldman Sachs is Investment Bank , they usually give IT Jobs(at good salaries though) to engineering graduates. They do not usually give Analyst positions to engineering grads , preferring to hire MBAs instead.(However , at IITs and BITS-Pilani , I-Banks do give junior Analyst positions to engg. grads. But this is very rare , just a couple of students from the whole batch get it.)
-
The major recruiters included Larsen and Toubro (24), Alstom (18), Areva T&D (13), Maruti (20), Tata Consulting Engineering (18), CDOT (16), NTPC (18), BEML (8), Nokia (10), L&T ECC (28), Indian Oil (8), Crompton Greaves (7), Power Grid (13), Bajaj (5), Oracle (12), Samsung (5), Tata Motors (5), Analog Devices (5) and Philips (5).
Among the companies that offered the highest pay packages include Yahoo! (Rs.12 lakh , given to an MCA student); D.E. Shaw Research (Rs.12 lakh); Amazon (Rs.11 lakh); Microsoft (Rs.9 lakh); Adobe (Rs.9.5 lakh); IOCL, NTPC, Power Grid and MRPL (Rs.8.5 lakh); DRDO, BEML and CDOT (Rs.6.5 lakh); Goldman Sachs (Rs.7 lakh) ; and Texas Instruments (Rs.6 lakh).
On the whole , placements were very good in NIT-C , inspite of the recession.

What this blog is all about ...
We are a bunch of friends from top-notch engineering colleges all over India. And we welcome you to this blog!
When it comes to choosing the right college , people usually ask :
1)What are the placements like?
2)What are its rankings?
We thought , why not create a blog just dedicated to these 2 things??Lo and behold , we created this blog!!!(Not a big deal , Blogspot did most of that :-) ).
In this blog ,we aim to gather authentic placement data and discuss it.We'll separate the "exclusive recruiters" from the "mass recruiters" and we'll analyze statistics and trends. We'll also try to list all valid rankings we can find and discuss them.
Due to our busy schedules , we may not be able to cover a lot of colleges. But we'd like you all to tell us which ones you want by leaving comments.
Engineering is the most \m/ career option( at least we think so :-) ) .Choosing the right college plays a key role. And this decision is going to affect your whole life , so make the best choice.
