IIIT-Hyderabad Placements

UPDATED: [Based on Mandatory Disclosure and placements section on the official website]

UPDATED part
Recently IIIT-Hyderabad has released information about last year's placements. It is not a part of the mandatory disclosure(as per AICTE norms). Hence the break-up of companies is not available.

Undergraduate Placement

S.No Program Participated Students Placed Awaiting Placement % of Placement Average Salary (INR)(Lac)
1 B Tech (CSE) 941 94 0 100 8.542
2 BTech (ECE) 27 27 0 100 5.50

  1. This includes six off-campus offers.

  2. This includes a $110,000-a-year offer from Google, USA and two same-value offers from Facebook, USA. If the three overseas offers are excluded, the domestic average compensation will be Rs.7.3 lac.

As mentioned in the original post, it was highly unlikely that there were any foreign placements for the last placement year. However this year IIIT-Hyderabad has clearly mentioned those offers. They include a $110,000 from Google and "two-same value offers" from Facebook,USA (which may imply those two offers are $110,000 as well).

Both Google and Facebook are highly selective recruiters. But Google has been visiting IIIT-Hyderabad for many years now. Most likely they have been recruiting for their India-based offices at around Rs. 10 lpa.
Definitely things are looking up for IIIT-Hyderabad! However by no means is this exclusive. Many other AIEEE colleges do have International placements such as NSIT, NIT-Surathkal etc.
Nevertheless this is one of the best placements in India for CS stream.Apart from placements IIIT-H is well known for its advanced pedagogy in the CS field.

Postgraduate Placement

S.No Program Participated Students Placed Awaiting Placement % of Placement Average Salary (INR)(Lac)
1 M Tech (CSE) 293 29 0 100 5.60
2 M Tech (CSIS) 94 9 0 100 4.85
3 M Tech (CL) 3 3 0 100 4.40
4 M Tech (VLSI) 20 195 1 95 4.22
5 M Tech (CASE) 9 4 5 445 4.50
6 M Tech (BI) 12 6 9 25 4.40

  1. One student each from M Tech (CSE) and M Tech (CSIS) has an off-campus job.

  2. This includes three students who only have internship placement. This year, in view of a continuing slump in the semiconductor job market, VLSI students, like in the past year, have offered to consider students with internships placement as “students placed”.

  3. M Tech (CASE) and M Tech (Bioinformatics) programs saw unimpressive placement in view of the depressed infrastructure and bioinformatics job markets.

  4. This includes two students who have internship cum job offers.

Clearly a marked difference. While UG students have done very well, MTech students haven't.

IIIT- Allahabad Placements 2008

[Based on official information from the IIIT-A website]

IIIT-A (Indian Institute of Information Technology - Allahabad) is a well-known Information Technology institute of India. So let's take a look at the placement scene there.
The BTech. batches being placed was the 2005 batch from IIIT-A main campus (87 students) and from the RGIIT-A i.e. Amethi Campus(57 students).Along with them were 70 MTech students , bringing the grand total of 214 students sitting for placements.
The UG courses are BTech. InformationTechnology and BTech. Electronics and Communication.

From 2003 to 2007 , the % of students placed has gone up from 98% to 100%.Given that it has only CS/EE related fields , it is not a big deal.
However it is interesting to see that the % of "Dream Job" offers has risen from 25% to 41%. (IIIT-A defines "Dream Job" as Rs. 6 Lakhs per Annum(lpa) . The definition of dream job can very from college to college.)

Average salary has shown a steady increase from Rs. 3.95 lpa to Rs. 5.05 lpa (2003 to 2007) which is very good.Note that the college has only CS/EE related fields , so it will have higher averages. But Rs. 5.05 lpa is a good figure.

But note that the highest salary has risen from Rs. 9 lpa to just 10.25 lpa from 2004 to 2007. Note that a highest of Rs. 10.25 lpa would indicate no foreign placement. This is a key differentiator.Elite colleges(Like IIT,BITS etc) have highest placements running into Rs. 20 lpa +.This occurs due to the conversion of a $ salary into Rupees.
International placements (To US/Europe) will have starting salaries of $50,000+ pa. as the cost of living is about 4 times higher there.

As for recruiters , the number of recruiters has risen from 24 to 35 in 2004-2007.What matters however , is the quality of the recruiters.

Under "Major Recruiters" , IIIT-A lists th following names:

ADOBE SYSTEMS
AMDOCS
ARCIENT
BHARATELECTRONICS
CAPGEMINI
CISCO
CITRIX R&D INDIA PVT. LTD.
CSC
D.E.SHAW INDIA SOFT.PVT.LTD.
FISERV
GCI
GLOBAL LOGIC
HUGHES SYSTIQUE
IBM GES
IBM INDIA PVT.LTD.
IBM ISL
ITC INFOTECH
MAQ Softwares
MICROSOFT IDC
NEWGEN
ONMOBILE
ORACLE
PATNI COMP.SYS.LTD.
TCS
THOROGOOD ASSOCIATES
WIPRO
YAHOO

Note that out of these , the ones that have been highlighted are "Exclusive Recruiters" , which do not go to less-reputed colleges.Exclusive recruiters will usually recruit 5(sometimes up to 10) students.Their packages are usually 6 - 7 lpa+ .

Companies like TCS,Wipro etc. are "Mass Recruiters" and will go to even less reputed colleges. They often recruit over 30 students , as they know that majority will not be joining their company.Their packages are lower , usually between 3 to 4.5 lpa.

Exclusive and Mass recruiters , are at 2 ends of the spectrum.A lot of the above companies could be giving intermediate salalries and recruiting just 5 to 10 students.

On the whole ,placement-wise , IIIT-A is a good option. The fact that it has only CS/EE related branches ensures good pay packages.

Imp. Note : While choosing colleges do not rely solely on placements. You must find out about other important factors such as quality of teaching , lab facilities , campus/student life, internship opportunities and avenues for higher studies in India/abroad.
