IIIT-Hyderabad Placements

UPDATED: [Based on Mandatory Disclosure and placements section on the official website]

UPDATED part
Recently IIIT-Hyderabad has released information about last year's placements. It is not a part of the mandatory disclosure(as per AICTE norms). Hence the break-up of companies is not available.

Undergraduate Placement

S.No Program Participated Students Placed Awaiting Placement % of Placement Average Salary (INR)(Lac)
1 B Tech (CSE) 941 94 0 100 8.542
2 BTech (ECE) 27 27 0 100 5.50

  1. This includes six off-campus offers.

  2. This includes a $110,000-a-year offer from Google, USA and two same-value offers from Facebook, USA. If the three overseas offers are excluded, the domestic average compensation will be Rs.7.3 lac.

As mentioned in the original post, it was highly unlikely that there were any foreign placements for the last placement year. However this year IIIT-Hyderabad has clearly mentioned those offers. They include a $110,000 from Google and "two-same value offers" from Facebook,USA (which may imply those two offers are $110,000 as well).

Both Google and Facebook are highly selective recruiters. But Google has been visiting IIIT-Hyderabad for many years now. Most likely they have been recruiting for their India-based offices at around Rs. 10 lpa.
Definitely things are looking up for IIIT-Hyderabad! However by no means is this exclusive. Many other AIEEE colleges do have International placements such as NSIT, NIT-Surathkal etc.
Nevertheless this is one of the best placements in India for CS stream.Apart from placements IIIT-H is well known for its advanced pedagogy in the CS field.

Postgraduate Placement

S.No Program Participated Students Placed Awaiting Placement % of Placement Average Salary (INR)(Lac)
1 M Tech (CSE) 293 29 0 100 5.60
2 M Tech (CSIS) 94 9 0 100 4.85
3 M Tech (CL) 3 3 0 100 4.40
4 M Tech (VLSI) 20 195 1 95 4.22
5 M Tech (CASE) 9 4 5 445 4.50
6 M Tech (BI) 12 6 9 25 4.40

  1. One student each from M Tech (CSE) and M Tech (CSIS) has an off-campus job.

  2. This includes three students who only have internship placement. This year, in view of a continuing slump in the semiconductor job market, VLSI students, like in the past year, have offered to consider students with internships placement as “students placed”.

  3. M Tech (CASE) and M Tech (Bioinformatics) programs saw unimpressive placement in view of the depressed infrastructure and bioinformatics job markets.

  4. This includes two students who have internship cum job offers.

Clearly a marked difference. While UG students have done very well, MTech students haven't.

MNIT-Jaipur Placements

[Based on information from the official website]

MNIT-Jaipur(Malviya National Institute of Technology-Jaipur) is one of the premier NITs of India. Here is an analysis of their placements.

According to the official website ,in the academic year 2008-2009:
  • 77 organizations visited/ conducted interviews for recruitment of final year student and selected 337 student out of total 340 eligible students.
  • Maximum Salary was Rs11.7 lpa(De Shaw), Average Package was Rs.4.54 lpa.and minimum was 3 Rs.3 lpa (Capgemini).
  • 28 Software companies visited the campus for the recruitment this year
  • 61 Core engineering companies visited the campus for the recruitment this year
  • 99.11% of eligible (340) UG candidates placed
  • More than 50% of the students placed in first 7 days from the commencement of placement.
  • INFOSYS was the biggest recruiter (58 students)
  • Record highest salary offered is Rs. 11.7 lpa by DE SHAW to 2 students of Computer engineering .
There were some big names like DeShaw,Samsung , Deloitte,NetAPP,NTPC,IOCL,Tata Motors which are likely to give Rs.6 lpa+ .Yahoo selected 3 (most likely above Rs. 7 lpa) whereas Google and Verizon took none.
Note that a lot big names like ST Microelectronics , Oracle,Microsoft etc. are missing.
Also , a maximum salary of Rs.11.7 lpa means that most likely there were no foreign placements(which are usually over $50,000 pa)

Dream job(most likely) would be an offer greater than Rs.4 lpa , preferable in a core company.

As it can be seen from the table , the overall averages are good , especially for EE , in which case it is above Rs. 5 lpa , which is great.Note that since the highest was Rs.11.7 lpa , there would be no "spiking" of the average caused by a single very large salary(eg. a foreign placement).

Also note that even Mech/Chemical/Civil have 4 lpa+ averages , which is very good.In fact Chemical average exceeds CS!!A reason for this could be due the PSUs like IOCl,ONGC,NTPC etc. which give 7-8 lpa and often recruit over 10 students. In fact , during this placement season , BPCL took 5 , NTPC took 18+4 , IOCL took 7.Their pays(calculated as pay-in-hand + benefits are quite good).

On the whole , MNIT-Jaipur had quite good placememnts , though not as good as NIT-Calicut(click here to see)

NIT-Calicut Placements

[Based on info from official website and articles in the Hindu Newspaper dt. 23-03-2009 and 06-04-2009 ]

NIT-Calicut(National Institute of Technology- Calicut) is one of the premier NITs of India. It has quite good placements , as we shall see in this article.
The official website , gives quite little information. Relevant to us would be the last 2 years placements stats of BE Degree .
To understand clearly how the data has been given , we need to understand the format:

(Branch : EL-PL-DR-%)

where EL-Eligible students, PL-Placed, DR-Dream jobs (Students who got more than one job), %-Percentage of placement.
The Branches are: Computer Science & Engineering ,Electronics & Communication Engineering ,Electrical & Electronics Engineering ,Mechanical Engineering ,Production Engineering,Chemical Engineering.

(Please click on the image for a better view)
Clearly the averages are quite good , especially for the CS/EE related branches and Mechanical. All branches show a good % of placement.

According to The Hindu newspaper, for the BE degree students being placed in 08-09 :
  • 309 B.Tech. students got 484 job offers, 97 per cent placements. Of these, 175 students got more than one offer.

  • Highest salary offered was Rs.12 lpa to 3 CS students by DE Saw Research, an IT consulting company. The lowest salary offered was Rs.3 llpa. (Last year, the highest was Rs.10 lpa ,lowest Rs.2.2 lpa ).This is a good improvement. However , since the highest is 12 lpa , it is unlikely that NIT-C had any foreign placements(which are usually over $50,000 pa).

  • The average salary remained almost same (Rs 4.75 lpa to Rs.4.8 lakh lpa). This is good , considering that there is a recession on currently. The no. of students wrt. salary range chart is given below:

  • Till February, 95 companies visited the campus (from August 2008 to February 2009). Out of these, 43 were engineering and manufacturing sector companies, 33 were IT product based companies, 9 consulting companies, 6 ITES companies, 2 were banking companies and 2 others.10 (PSUs) recruited 25 per cent of the graduates.

  • 97% of the students got placement in core engineering areas while rest in ITES sectors.Note that "Core" term may have been misused , as they may have considered IT as "Core" for CS.Even though Goldman Sachs is Investment Bank , they usually give IT Jobs(at good salaries though) to engineering graduates. They do not usually give Analyst positions to engineering grads , preferring to hire MBAs instead.(However , at IITs and BITS-Pilani , I-Banks do give junior Analyst positions to engg. grads. But this is very rare , just a couple of students from the whole batch get it.)

  • The major recruiters included Larsen and Toubro (24), Alstom (18), Areva T&D (13), Maruti (20), Tata Consulting Engineering (18), CDOT (16), NTPC (18), BEML (8), Nokia (10), L&T ECC (28), Indian Oil (8), Crompton Greaves (7), Power Grid (13), Bajaj (5), Oracle (12), Samsung (5), Tata Motors (5), Analog Devices (5) and Philips (5).

  • Among the companies that offered the highest pay packages include Yahoo! (Rs.12 lakh , given to an MCA student); D.E. Shaw Research (Rs.12 lakh); Amazon (Rs.11 lakh); Microsoft (Rs.9 lakh); Adobe (Rs.9.5 lakh); IOCL, NTPC, Power Grid and MRPL (Rs.8.5 lakh); DRDO, BEML and CDOT (Rs.6.5 lakh); Goldman Sachs (Rs.7 lakh) ; and Texas Instruments (Rs.6 lakh).

On the whole , placements were very good in NIT-C , inspite of the recession.

BIT-Mesra Placements

[Based on official information from BIT-Mesra website]

Birla Institute of Technology , Mesra (Ranchi) is a well-known institute in India. It has some other campuses too , such as in Allahabad,Patna,Jaipur,Kolkata etc.Note that BIT-Mesra is NOT related to any of the BITS-Pilani campuses(Pilani,Goa,Hyderabad,Dubai).
Let us take a look at its placement scene.
The following pie chart shows the distribution of all students sitting for placements.

The UG students sitting for placements are from a variety of streams(Unlike colleges like IIIT , DA-IICT ,which have only CS/EE related streams. )

However , even here , we see a large portion of the pie has CS/EE related disciplines such as CSE,IT,ECE,EEE.They together account for 464 out of 642 BE seats i.e. about 72% .

Here is a chart about the salaries.

Average salary has increased from 3.7 lpa to 4.43 lpa from 06-07 to 08-09.However the maximum salary has not increased much from 9.1 lpa to 10.35 lpa. This would indicate a lack of foreign placments(which are usually over $50,000).

Note: For those of you who have forgotten high school maths, median is the most frequently occurring term in the set of numbers. This is an important concept.
Many colleges show high average salaries because they convert a foreign placement into Rs. and then calculate the average. So often averages can be misleading.

Majority of the branches have 100% + placement , which is very good. However a large number of these placements would be coming from IT Mass Recruiters , which usually offer lower salaries(Rs. 2.5 to 4 lpa).

There were 85 companies that recruited in 07-08 and 72 in 08-09.
Among them were big names likeFreescale,GoldmanSachs,JohnDeere
,Deloitte,Microsoft,Oracle,
PriceWaterhouseCoopers,
Samsung,Tata Motors,
TexasInstruments,Yahoo,
NTPC,IOCL,ST Microelectronics,
Evalueserve,Intel,HSBC.

Note that though Google is listed as a "past recruiter" , Google doesn't appear in the 07-08 or in the 08-09 placement lists.

On the whole , this does seem to be a good place. It does have many Mech. related companies coming along with many CS/IT/EE related ones.

DA-IICT Placements

[Based on official information from DA-IICT website]

DA-IICT(Dhirubhai Ambani Institute of Information and Communication Technology) , Gandhinagar is a well-known Information Technology institute. Here is a bit about its placements.

Its flagship UG degree is the BTech ICT(Information and Communication Technology) which is a mix of computer science , electronics and communications disciplines. This fact is reflected by the recruiters it attracts.

The recruiters are classified as "Niche"(those offering more than Rs. 4 lpa) and "Regular"(which offer less than Rs. 4 lpa ).

The BTech. ICT batch of 2005 has 217 students. Another 123 students are in 2 higher degrees. For these students , following statistics have been given:

The no. of job offers going up from 379 to 558 is a good sign , though it is most likely that these offers have come from IT Mass Recruiters , like TCS,Wipro etc.

However , the average package of Rs. 3.1 lpa is not very good ,as compared to a similar IT college(Take a look at the IIIT-A analysis). The highest package of 9.1 lpa would indicate that there are no international placements(which usually are over $50,000 pa).

Here is a list of recruiters:

One can see a mix of IT , CS , Electronics related companies.Exclusive recruiters like ARM , Microsoft IDC,NVidia,Qualcomm,ST Microelectronics,Texas Instruments can be seen.

It is not clear that what salaries they offerred but it is most likely that they were 6lpa+.Note that HP and Motorola are also good companies , but usually they offer just 4-5 lpa.

On the whole , we feel that DA-IICT doesn't seem to have that great on-campus placements as say IIIT-A and IIIT-H.However their ICT course structure is excellent , containing a mix of IT , CS and ECE. Their infrastrcuture , faculty and higher education options(especially abroad) seem quite good.

IIIT- Allahabad Placements 2008

[Based on official information from the IIIT-A website]

IIIT-A (Indian Institute of Information Technology - Allahabad) is a well-known Information Technology institute of India. So let's take a look at the placement scene there.
The BTech. batches being placed was the 2005 batch from IIIT-A main campus (87 students) and from the RGIIT-A i.e. Amethi Campus(57 students).Along with them were 70 MTech students , bringing the grand total of 214 students sitting for placements.
The UG courses are BTech. InformationTechnology and BTech. Electronics and Communication.

From 2003 to 2007 , the % of students placed has gone up from 98% to 100%.Given that it has only CS/EE related fields , it is not a big deal.
However it is interesting to see that the % of "Dream Job" offers has risen from 25% to 41%. (IIIT-A defines "Dream Job" as Rs. 6 Lakhs per Annum(lpa) . The definition of dream job can very from college to college.)

Average salary has shown a steady increase from Rs. 3.95 lpa to Rs. 5.05 lpa (2003 to 2007) which is very good.Note that the college has only CS/EE related fields , so it will have higher averages. But Rs. 5.05 lpa is a good figure.

But note that the highest salary has risen from Rs. 9 lpa to just 10.25 lpa from 2004 to 2007. Note that a highest of Rs. 10.25 lpa would indicate no foreign placement. This is a key differentiator.Elite colleges(Like IIT,BITS etc) have highest placements running into Rs. 20 lpa +.This occurs due to the conversion of a $ salary into Rupees.
International placements (To US/Europe) will have starting salaries of $50,000+ pa. as the cost of living is about 4 times higher there.

As for recruiters , the number of recruiters has risen from 24 to 35 in 2004-2007.What matters however , is the quality of the recruiters.

Under "Major Recruiters" , IIIT-A lists th following names:

ADOBE SYSTEMS
AMDOCS
ARCIENT
BHARATELECTRONICS
CAPGEMINI
CISCO
CITRIX R&D INDIA PVT. LTD.
CSC
D.E.SHAW INDIA SOFT.PVT.LTD.
FISERV
GCI
GLOBAL LOGIC
HUGHES SYSTIQUE
IBM GES
IBM INDIA PVT.LTD.
IBM ISL
ITC INFOTECH
MAQ Softwares
MICROSOFT IDC
NEWGEN
ONMOBILE
ORACLE
PATNI COMP.SYS.LTD.
TCS
THOROGOOD ASSOCIATES
WIPRO
YAHOO

Note that out of these , the ones that have been highlighted are "Exclusive Recruiters" , which do not go to less-reputed colleges.Exclusive recruiters will usually recruit 5(sometimes up to 10) students.Their packages are usually 6 - 7 lpa+ .

Companies like TCS,Wipro etc. are "Mass Recruiters" and will go to even less reputed colleges. They often recruit over 30 students , as they know that majority will not be joining their company.Their packages are lower , usually between 3 to 4.5 lpa.

Exclusive and Mass recruiters , are at 2 ends of the spectrum.A lot of the above companies could be giving intermediate salalries and recruiting just 5 to 10 students.

On the whole ,placement-wise , IIIT-A is a good option. The fact that it has only CS/EE related branches ensures good pay packages.

Imp. Note : While choosing colleges do not rely solely on placements. You must find out about other important factors such as quality of teaching , lab facilities , campus/student life, internship opportunities and avenues for higher studies in India/abroad.
