BIT-Mesra Placements

[Based on official information from BIT-Mesra website]

Birla Institute of Technology , Mesra (Ranchi) is a well-known institute in India. It has some other campuses too , such as in Allahabad,Patna,Jaipur,Kolkata etc.Note that BIT-Mesra is NOT related to any of the BITS-Pilani campuses(Pilani,Goa,Hyderabad,Dubai).
Let us take a look at its placement scene.
The following pie chart shows the distribution of all students sitting for placements.

The UG students sitting for placements are from a variety of streams(Unlike colleges like IIIT , DA-IICT ,which have only CS/EE related streams. )

However , even here , we see a large portion of the pie has CS/EE related disciplines such as CSE,IT,ECE,EEE.They together account for 464 out of 642 BE seats i.e. about 72% .

Here is a chart about the salaries.

Average salary has increased from 3.7 lpa to 4.43 lpa from 06-07 to 08-09.However the maximum salary has not increased much from 9.1 lpa to 10.35 lpa. This would indicate a lack of foreign placments(which are usually over $50,000).

Note: For those of you who have forgotten high school maths, median is the most frequently occurring term in the set of numbers. This is an important concept.
Many colleges show high average salaries because they convert a foreign placement into Rs. and then calculate the average. So often averages can be misleading.

Majority of the branches have 100% + placement , which is very good. However a large number of these placements would be coming from IT Mass Recruiters , which usually offer lower salaries(Rs. 2.5 to 4 lpa).

There were 85 companies that recruited in 07-08 and 72 in 08-09.
Among them were big names likeFreescale,GoldmanSachs,JohnDeere
,Deloitte,Microsoft,Oracle,
PriceWaterhouseCoopers,
Samsung,Tata Motors,
TexasInstruments,Yahoo,
NTPC,IOCL,ST Microelectronics,
Evalueserve,Intel,HSBC.

Note that though Google is listed as a "past recruiter" , Google doesn't appear in the 07-08 or in the 08-09 placement lists.

On the whole , this does seem to be a good place. It does have many Mech. related companies coming along with many CS/IT/EE related ones.

DA-IICT Placements

[Based on official information from DA-IICT website]

DA-IICT(Dhirubhai Ambani Institute of Information and Communication Technology) , Gandhinagar is a well-known Information Technology institute. Here is a bit about its placements.

Its flagship UG degree is the BTech ICT(Information and Communication Technology) which is a mix of computer science , electronics and communications disciplines. This fact is reflected by the recruiters it attracts.

The recruiters are classified as "Niche"(those offering more than Rs. 4 lpa) and "Regular"(which offer less than Rs. 4 lpa ).

The BTech. ICT batch of 2005 has 217 students. Another 123 students are in 2 higher degrees. For these students , following statistics have been given:

The no. of job offers going up from 379 to 558 is a good sign , though it is most likely that these offers have come from IT Mass Recruiters , like TCS,Wipro etc.

However , the average package of Rs. 3.1 lpa is not very good ,as compared to a similar IT college(Take a look at the IIIT-A analysis). The highest package of 9.1 lpa would indicate that there are no international placements(which usually are over $50,000 pa).

Here is a list of recruiters:

One can see a mix of IT , CS , Electronics related companies.Exclusive recruiters like ARM , Microsoft IDC,NVidia,Qualcomm,ST Microelectronics,Texas Instruments can be seen.

It is not clear that what salaries they offerred but it is most likely that they were 6lpa+.Note that HP and Motorola are also good companies , but usually they offer just 4-5 lpa.

On the whole , we feel that DA-IICT doesn't seem to have that great on-campus placements as say IIIT-A and IIIT-H.However their ICT course structure is excellent , containing a mix of IT , CS and ECE. Their infrastrcuture , faculty and higher education options(especially abroad) seem quite good.
