Birla Institute of Technology , Mesra (Ranchi) is a well-known institute in India. It has some other campuses too , such as in Allahabad,Patna,Jaipur,Kolkata etc.Note that BIT-Mesra is NOT related to any of the BITS-Pilani campuses(Pilani,Goa,Hyderabad,Dubai).
Let us take a look at its placement scene.
The following pie chart shows the distribution of all students sitting for placements.
The UG students sitting for placements are from a variety of streams(Unlike colleges like IIIT , DA-IICT ,which have only CS/EE related streams. )
However , even here , we see a large portion of the pie has CS/EE related disciplines such as CSE,IT,ECE,EEE.They together account for 464 out of 642 BE seats i.e. about 72% .
Here is a chart about the salaries.
Average salary has increased from 3.7 lpa to 4.43 lpa from 06-07 to 08-09.However the maximum salary has not increased much from 9.1 lpa to 10.35 lpa. This would indicate a lack of foreign placments(which are usually over $50,000).
Note: For those of you who have forgotten high school maths, median is the most frequently occurring term in the set of numbers. This is an important concept.
Many colleges show high average salaries because they convert a foreign placement into Rs. and then calculate the average. So often averages can be misleading.
Majority of the branches have 100% + placement , which is very good. However a large number of these placements would be coming from IT Mass Recruiters , which usually offer lower salaries(Rs. 2.5 to 4 lpa).
Among them were big names likeFreescale,GoldmanSachs,JohnDeere
,Deloitte,Microsoft,Oracle,
PriceWaterhouseCoopers,
Samsung,Tata Motors,
TexasInstruments,Yahoo,
NTPC,IOCL,ST Microelectronics,
Evalueserve,Intel,HSBC.
Note that though Google is listed as a "past recruiter" , Google doesn't appear in the 07-08 or in the 08-09 placement lists.
On the whole , this does seem to be a good place. It does have many Mech. related companies coming along with many CS/IT/EE related ones.
